    1. What I *did* expect (and got) from this book: - an intelligent contrast of Catholic and Evangelical perspectives on Mary- Shea's trademark takedown of the extremes of Dan-Brown fantasies ("spirituality a vast Tapioca Benevolence")- the same for the more extreme Catholic-fearing Evangelical viewpoints- boodles of references so I can check out any intriguing ideas for myself, from the Fathers to internet chain lettersWhat I did *not* expect (but DID get) from this book: - a clearer understanding o [...]

    2. Fabulous book, interesting, and full of information. Good place to get info on the high esteem in which many religious communities hold the Virgin Mary, and why. The first volume of the trilogy is probably the most "apologetic" of this trilogy of Mary by Mark P. Shea. I do not mean that Shea apologizes for his veneration of the Virgin, but that he removes barriers to understanding of the veneration which the catholic church regards Mary.In volume three, "Madern Myths and Ancient Truths," Shea di [...]

    3. First in a series of three books on the subject. This was by far the best book I've read to date addressing the subject of the Catholic Church's teachings on Mary. The book is written by an Evangelical convert, and thus it addresses many of the misunderstandings and arguments from that perspective. Great book with lots of sources for further study on the subject. Highly recommended for anyone seeking to understanding the Catholic Church's teachings on Mary.

    4. Summary: Mark Shea approaches Mary and Marian dogma from the point of view of a Protestant encountering her for the first time. He goes through misconceptions and misinformation against the Church, its teaching, and the way that it forms its teachings.Review: I found this book to be excellent. It was engaging, interesting, and seeingly theologically sound (though I am not a theologian, so you shouldn't take my word for it). I look forward to reading the next two.

    5. Mark Shea doesn't really get into the Marian dogmas until Volume II, which was a bit surprising, but it turns out it was also very wise. In Volume I: Modern Myths and Ancient Truths, Shea lays the groundwork for overcoming Evangelical and secular misunderstandings about Mary, so that one can begin to see Mary as the Church sees her. Every Evangelical should read this book.

    6. very well laid out and interesting, i liked the style with which the topic was presented. a very logical and intelligent presentation but still has a bit of a witty style to it, which is similar to his delivery when i have heard him give talks.
