    1. This was not quite what I expected. First of all, this book looks really slim, so I thought it would be a quick read. Secondly, I was certainly expecting a book about hard living conditions, but I had thought it would be more flat. These Swedish worker's novels from the first half of the 20th century often strike me as a bit too focused on their cause, at expense of the emotional aspect. Hjortronlandet is almost like that; the focus is definitely on living conditions and not so much on individua [...]

    3. This is an interesting novel concerning the hard and difficult life of the early farmers in the north of Sweden. It is somewhat fragmented though and quite difficult to detect the common thread even though there are not that many characters. It would be improved if there was one more worked out story that we could follow.
