    1. "From the age of 12 Henley suffered from tuberculosis of the bone which resulted in the amputation of his left leg below the knee during either 1865 or 1868-69. According to Robert Louis Stevenson's letters, the idea for the character of Long John Silver was inspired by his real-life friend Henley. He suffered from tuberculosis of the bone and endured one amputation. On one occasion he was a patient of the well-known surgeon, Sir Joseph Lister, who is the subject of his poem "The Chief" from the collection, "In Hospital," which is undeniably one of the strongest collections of poetry in this volume.     3. I loved some of the poems (Invictus will always be one of my favorites and the hospital poems were wonderfully moody) but this was hit or miss. I like his dark, bitter poetry; his lighter stuff leaves a lot to be desired. In fairness though, I did have a poetry professor who once taught us it was almost impossible to write a good happy poem, and Henley is a fine example of the difference in quality between happy poetry and sad poetry. So, there's that.
