    1. Early in the aughts, a composer friend sent me a couple of Thomas Adès's first recordings along with a quizzical note. I played through them and came away with little idea of how they worked. The pieces, all for a small set of forces (sometimes solo piano, sometimes voice and piano or limited ensemble), had little in the way of traditional rhythmic or thematic organization that I could grasp. I have to admit that my formal musical training is pretty minimal, but my composer friend had a decent [...]

    2. Spending time with this book is such an unpleasant experience, it nearly makes me rethink my enthusiastic admiration for Adès as a composer. I've followed his career with great interest and seen him perform and conduct several times, so I have to say that this book came as a real disappointment, and I don't believe he did himself any favors by taking part in its creation."I hate the word 'people,'" he tells us at one juncture. "When somebody uses it they're usually lying about something for the [...]

    3. This was tough for someone not actually an expert and coming at it with curiosity but not with all the tools needed to decipher some of the heavier technical and theoretical ideas and language. But there were also wonderful ideas and descriptions that inspired me to want to tackle the music culture so I was more than a dilettante.

    4. No matter what type of art you create, it's always fascinating and enlightening to hear about another artist's process. I am not the biggest fan of Ades' music and composition, but I found this book, and his thoughts, truly beautiful. Highly recommended for anyone who creates.
